Regal Antlion 11x14 (SO-2)

Madagascar, France, 11" x 14"

Though commonly mistaken for dragonflies, antlions such as this Palpares species are truly unique. While dragonflies extend their wings while at rest, antlions fold theirs over their abdomen like a tent. Antlions have more visible antennae and are more slender bodied.

As larvae, the predacious antlion can be found burrowing small pits into loose soil. These are used to trap insects that are readily devoured.

This is one of the largest antlion species with a wingspan between 4.5-5".
